AbstractPlace, location and locality are examined in the context of the development of tourism in a way that is consistent with the concept of sustainable development. Concepts relating to tourism destination management are discussed in this context and a number of characteristics indicating possible success factors are drawn out. Two examples from Norway are used to illustrate how successful destination management strategies can be applied and which of the success factors appear to be the most important. The paper suggests a very strong role for leadership, external funding, support from appropriate external agencies and the existence of consumer demand in an area where small size is more conducive to success.
