AbstractThe large weight of evidence on associations between air pollutants and health outcomes provides substantive support for causal relationships. However work on the establishment of causal pathways from air quality interventions is scarce. Results of a study show that modest restrictions in fuel sulfur led to sharp falls in transition metals in addition to SO2 and were associated with an immediate decline in cardiopulmonary mortality. However, gaps still remain at the population level in establishing a sound causal relationship.
