Objectives
1 Improve our understanding of the role that global energy and finance played in the last two decades of Soviet history, and ultimately in its fall; 2 Develop a more detailed knowledge of the periodization of the rise of finance and the changes in the organization of capitalism that inaugurated the present in which we live; 3 Contribute to a global literature about the single, most necessary input to the survival of modern life: fossil energy (especially oil and gas); 4 Make an important historiographical intervention in Soviet and Cold War studies in bringing economy back to the center of debates; 5 Present a case study to test theories on energy-determined institutional capture and the oil curse, and to analyze the recent historical context we need to understand Russia today.
