AbstractThe role of collagen fibres in biological bone-bonding of crystalline hydroxyapalite implant was analyzed. The mechanism involved interdigitation of collagen fibres into the surface layers of implant material. It was found that the bonding zone consists of nano-sized crystallites and organic bone matrix of collagen fibres. It was also found that the incorporation of collagen fibres with hydroxyapatite was necessary in the toughening and strengthening of bone bonding.
