Abstract | This article reviews the challenges recently posed to the Chinese labour movement in its work agenda which emanate from the nation's latest endeavours in reconstructing and modernising its socialist economy. It notes the growing propensity of the reformed Chinese economy and enterprises to symptoms of 'industrial pluralism' such as workplace strife and strikes, as well as incessant inflation and wage haggling. This article also points to the strategic importance for the All China Federation of Trade Unions of a federal structure, if it is to function as a bona-fide industrial agency in representing the authentic aspirations and shopfloor interests of the Chinese workers through its umbrella network of local union councils and 'grassroots' organisations. |
