AbstractThe effect of streamwise V-grooves on the transition of the flows over circular cylinder within subcritical flow regime of smooth cylinder was investigated. Based on the shear stress distributions and boundary layer characteristics, the shift to higher flow regimes at low Reynolds number is due to earlier transition of the boundary layer which is associated with high surface shear stress and the presence of inflexion point in the velocity profiles. The velocity profiles also indicate the low velocity region within the grooves and the ‘normal’ higher velocity region outside.
