AbstractBecause of Emperor Qianlong's condemnation of Qian Qianyi, the deeds and words of Qian, as well as his name, suddenly turned into taboos in local histories during the late Qianlong reign. However, the sources in the Qing gazetteers show that the imperial measures could hardly achieve the emperor’s goal. As a matter of fact, they could neither eradicate the non-censored publications during the Qianlong literary inquisition nor prohibit the use of Qian’s works in the gazetteers compiled after the edict. This illustrates that in the struggle for cultural hegemony, the ruling class could not win the game simply by exercising its political power. To a certain extent, the limited effect of Emperor Qianlong’s condemnation of Qian Qainyi reflects the difference between the views of the ruler and the common consent of the Han literati.
