AbstractStudents entering university often find it challenging to meet the expectations and requirements of academic English at university as it is very different from general English at school that they are familiar with. In this presentation, I will discuss the design of a General University course at HKU that aims to enhance students’ proficiency in academic English and so bridge the gap between the English they have learnt at secondary school and the language expected of them in university studies. Tasks designed to familiarize students with the register will be used for illustration. The focus of this presentation will be on teaching of academic writing, covering topics such as searching for sources, synthesizing information from sources and using sources in academic writing.
