AbstractWe explain how similar regimes choose different trajectories of elite politics institutionalization. We introduce an independent variable “old men” – retired leaders who still significantly influence politics of a regime after their retirement. Voluntarily retired autocrats influence heir, thereby alleviating hazards during leadership transition in authoritarian regimes. We explain what stays behind “institutional” frameworks.
