AbstractThe key but difficult task in underground construction or below water is the accurate quantification and characterization of the 3D spatial distribution of different geomaterials in underground at the construction site. This paper presents a digital in-situ tool to resolve the task. It is the drilling process monitoring (DPM) technique for continuously and automatically digitizing the in-situ mechanical properties of both soil and rock when the bit is being drilled into ground. DPM can digitize and quantify underground geomaterials. It can upgrade all the drilling activities to become an in-situ technique of choice for assessment and measurement of the continuous quality & strength distribution of geomaterials (soils or rocks) in undergrounds!
