AbstractWe develop a new strategy that adopts long wavelength light-excitable photosensitizers to activate the cleavage of photocleavable prodrugs. The prodrugs are cleaved to release free drugs at their triplet excited (T1) state which is activated by photosensitizers through triplet-triplet energy transfer (TTET) process. We demonstrate that this strategy can increase the excitation wavelength while minimize the sacrifices of photocleavage quantum yield. This long wavelength light-triggered photocleavage strategy offers new solutions for spatiotemporal control of drug release.
