Memories of Fuk Tsun Street : the urban cultural landscape heritage of Tai Kok Tsui district, Hong Kong

Abstract

Tai Kok Tsui (大角咀) is a neighbourhood located in Yau Tsim Mong district of West Kowloon, Hong Kong. Throughout the past decades, Tai Kok Tsui transformed from a ship-building base in post-war era, to industrial centre in the 1950s to the residential-commercial mix today. Given such, the district has developed into a distinctive urban cultural landscape which contains rich tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Similar to many old districts, Tai Kok Tsui had also undergone frequent renewal projects throughout the years. Since the 2000s, the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) had initiated more than 10 redevelopment projects in the district. Amongst which, 6 of them were within the Fuk Tsun Street (福全街) locality. Taking Fuk Tsun Street as a study street, this research aims to record and document the tangible and intangible cultural assets of the place. The study begins with the historical development of the district and its setting into urban cultural landscape. Based on the categories given in Article 1 of the Quebec Declaration, the tangible and intangible urban cultural landscape heritage elements of Fuk Tsun Street are identified and mapped accordingly. Drawing from such, a Statement of Significance (SoS) will be written to conclude the Spirit of Place of Tai Kok Tsui.
