AbstractThe longitudinal acoustic attenuation (LAA) in the superconducting state is theoretically investigated to provide a reference for experimental determination of the pairing symmetry. For clean superconductors the LAA is strongly anisotropic with the propagation direction of the acoustic phonon in both the d wave and the s+id wave case. For dirty superconductors, the LAA obeys a power law at small ω in the d wave case, and has no discontinuous jump at ω = 2Δ + s in the s + id wave case.
