Biography

Tim Gruenewald is a graduate of Universität Mannheim (Diplom), Emory University (MA) and the University of Washington (PhD). Before coming to Hong Kong in 2009 he was a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Gruenewald researches and teaches American and German film, television, and literature of the 20th century. At HKU he is teaching courses on American film history and popular culture. In the classroom he relates cultural texts to their historical context and combines close readings with critical theory. His research focuses on intersections of race and national identity. He is currently completing a documentary on monuments and memorials in western South Dakota, which relates Mount Rushmore to Wounded Knee and explores issues of Native American history and memory. He just completed a piece on R.W. Fassbinder’s film Whity which reflects on the legacy of slavery and racism in the United States. Dr Gruenewald’s publications include articles on the television of Alexander Kluge, Urs Widmer’s novel Im Kongo, and David Mamet’s American Buffalo. He has presented widely on German and American directors at conferences in the US and the UK including on Francis Ford Coppola and Trinh T. Minh-ha.
