One of the daily challenges of a pathologist is to correctly classify tumors into biological categories so that patients are managed appropriately. However, many lesions are not classifiable as either benign or malignant. These problematic or atypical lesions, even if managed conservatively, often require long follow-ups, which can lead to anxiety in the patient. To supplement his years of experience in diagnostic gynecological pathology, Professor Ip endeavors to gain a greater understanding of rare and uncommon gynecological malignancies, especially those with ambiguous morphology and uncertain biological behavior. His research interests are to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of the development and progression of some of these malignancies, in search of biomarkers to aid diagnosis and to conduct preclinical drug testing. Such valuable information has a direct impact on patient management and may serve as a foundation for the development of targeted therapy and personalized medicine. Professor Ip currently has active and established collaborations both locally and internationally.

Finding better treatments for patients who are suffering from rare cancers - diseases that are less well understood and often less well studied.  He wants to improve the lives of those who are less fortunate. Professor Ip is currently studying the genetic and genomic changes in his large collection of cases as well as conducting preclinical drug testing.

He encourages his students to discover their own personal and professional life missions, seek their best individual roles and responsibilities, and fully understand the unique contributions they can offer that will improve the lives of their patients and society as a whole.

Professor Ip is currently an Examiner (and formerly Chief Examiner) for Anatomical Pathology at The Hong Kong College of Pathologists and was a panel member for the Genetic and Genomic Pathology First Fellowship Assessment for the College. He is an expert member of the Uterine Sarcoma panel and Endometrial Cancer panel for International Collaboration in Cancer Reporting (ICCR).
