Short Biography:

Dr Chung graduated from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2004 and received his surgical training in Queen Mary Hospital.  He attained his fellowship qualification in 2011 and the Master of Surgery in 2017.  He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Paediatric Surgery, HKU.

Dr Chung has concentrated his clinical experience and research on paediatric hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases.  He has published 2 book chapters and 110 articles in top ranking journals including the Lancet, The Journal of Hepatology and The Journal of Paediatric Surgery.  He conducted the first regional multi-center study in the field of paediatric surgery which was awarded the Best Original Paper by the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong.  As a recognition of his publication experience, Dr Chung has been appointed as the editorial board member of several international journals.  Currently, he is the PI/Co-PI of four research projects funded by the RGC-GRF and HMRF with a total funding of over HKD 5.4M.  Besides, Dr Chung is a Co-I of a 5-year Theme-Based Research Scheme project which focuses on translational research in biliary atresia with funding amount HKD 56M.   Internationally, he has close collaborations with multiple renowned centres and serves a leadership role in the Pacific Association of Paediatric Surgeons.  He has presented 51 abstracts and given 28 invited lectures world-wide.  Dr Chung is the supervisor/mentor of post-graduate students in HKU.   Because of his outstanding achievement, he has received two prestigious surgical awards: the GB Ong Travelling Fellowship (2018) and the American College of Surgeons Carlos Pellegrini Traveling Fellowship (2019).

Dr Chung is a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery and highly experienced in laparoscopic neonatal surgery.  He has performed the first paediatric laparoscopic liver resection in town.  Besides clinical works, he is heavily involved in medical education.  He is involved in various educational committees in HKU and is currently an accredited trainer and examiner of the Paediatric Surgery Board in Hong Kong.  He is currently the vice president of the Hong Kong Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition and the treasurer of the Asian Surgical Association.
