Professor Zhang, Xiao 張晓
Dr. Zhang Xiao is currently tenured Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong. Before that, he was Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology at Beijing Normal University between 2009 and 2012 and then in the Department of Early Childhood Education at the Education University of Hong Kong between 2012 and 2016. He received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Hong Kong and his post-doctoral training in Developmental and Educational Psychology from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland. His research interests lie in the fields of early childhood development, learning, and education. His research has been funded by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and he has secured more than HK$2.5 million from these funding bodies. He published over 50 journal papers in the areas of early childhood education. His work appears in the leading journals such as Child Development, Learning and Instruction, Developmental Psychology, Contemporary Educational Psychology, Journal of School Psychology, Early Childhood Research Quarterly, and Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology. He has won numerous awards, such as Faculty Outstanding Young Researcher Award and Research Output Prize at the University of Hong Kong and President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Research at the Education University of Hong Kong. He has been invited for six keynote speeches in early childhood conferences and over 20 academic talks in universities, as well as to serve in the editorial boards for six high-impact international journals, including the Associate Editor for Early Childhood Research Quarterly for two terms from 2016 to 2021. Dr. Zhang is passionate about teaching and research. He has gained many years of experience in early childhood teacher education and has also committed to translating his research findings into educational practices. His recent work on the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals’ infant-toddler programs can best illustrate the impact of his research on young children’s learning and development in real-life settings. Dr. Zhang has contributed significantly to the administration work across departmental, faculty, and university levels, such as chairing the Departmental Research Committee at the University of Hong Kong and directing the MEd programme in Early Childhood Education at the Education University of Hong Kong.
