Biography

Chin-Hsi Lin is an applied linguist who is interested in the intersection of language learning and technology. He received a B.A. in Chinese Language and M.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from National Taiwan Normal University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Education (Language, Literacy, and Technology) from the University of California, Irvine.

His primary research interests concern emerging technologies in language education. Using advanced statistics such as survival analysis and hierarchical linear modeling, he investigates the learning processes and outcomes associated with the use of social networking sites in out-of-school contexts. In addition, he also investigates how teachers’ pedagogy and learners’ characteristics affect learning outcomes in online language courses in K-12 settings and higher education.

His secondary research interest is the psychology of reading, with special reference to the reading development of Chinese language learners, and in particular how first-language and orthographic co-occurrence in the second language affect Chinese learners’ reading development. In the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education, Dr. Lin teaches several online courses, including online learning and teaching, second language education and technology, and Internet research methods.
