Dr Edmond Choi, PhD, RN, FRSPH, FHEA, FAAN, is a registered nurse. His work focuses on sexual health research, with an emphasis on adolescents, young adults and sexual minorities. Since starting his assistant professorship at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2017, he has obtained five external competitive research grants, including the Early Career Scheme and General Research Fund from the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong, the Council for the AIDS Trust Fund and the Health and Medical Research Fund. He examines topical sexual health issues using randomised controlled trials, epidemiological surveys and qualitative approaches. He has led his research team in testing the effectiveness of various sexual health promotion interventions. To maximise the impact of his scholarly works, he actively collaborates with overseas scholars and local non-governmental organisations.
Dr Choi has a strong publication record with a high field-weighted citation impact; he was listed in the top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists in 2021 by Stanford University. He has published 100 articles (48 as the first, corresponding or last author) in international high-impact peer-reviewed journals in nursing, sexual health and digital health, such as JMIR Public Health and Surveillance, Journal of Sex Research and Journal of Advanced Nursing. Dr Choi was also one of the editors of the Wiley journal Health and Social Care in the Community.
Dr Choi also excels in nursing education. His teaching effectiveness is consistently reflected in his outstanding evaluation scores. He has extensive experience leading undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Currently, he is the director of the Doctor of Nursing programme. To enhance the global citizenship of nursing students, he developed experiential learning projects in Africa and Asia. In 2020, he received the HKU Early Career Teaching Award and Faculty Teaching Medal in recognition of his contributions to teaching and learning.
