AbstractThe present study investigated how positive social personalities help to protect Filipino domestic workers (FDWs) in Hong Kong from psychological problems. Life satisfaction, dispositional optimism, and problem-solving style of 100 FDWs were examined with revised Quality of Life Inventory, Life Orientation Test, and Problem-solving Inventory respectively. 20 FDWs were interviewed and qualitative analysis was done by the grounded theory method. Life satisfaction was found to have a strong positive correlation with problem-solving style and a weak positive correlation with dispositional optimism. Implications from this study could help health profession in designing preventive programs for overseas workers.
