AbstractIn many countries, "research on research" has led to coordinated policies aimed at influencing the topics, questions, methods, and modes of dissemination of education research. This paper examines recent attempts to study the quality of education research in the United States, Great Britain, and Hong Kong, as well as other OECD member states. It argues that it is unclear whether much "research on research" is unable to provide credible answers to questions about the state of research. The paper concludes with an update of the progress of work which employs a new set of indicators to study education research activity in Hong Kong, Singapore, and the United States.
