AbstractFew studies have investigated the validity of self-collected nose and throat swabs for influenza confirmation in community settings. We followed outpatients with confirmed influenza with sequential measurement of viral loads and applied log-linear regression models to the viral shedding patterns. Among 176 outpatients with confirmed influenza, the detection of virus and quantitative viral loads obtained from self-swabs was consistent with statistical predictions based on earlier and later measurements, suggesting that self-collected nose and throat swabs can be a valid alternative for virologic confirmation of influenza A or B infection in a community setting. © 2011 The Author.

Financial support. The Influenza Resistance Information Study was supported by Hoffmann-La Roche. The household transmission study was supported with federal funds from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (contract no. HHSN266200700005C; ADB no. N01-AI-70005) (NIAID Centers for Excellence in Influenza Research and Surveillance); the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (1 U01 CI000439-02); and the Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Disease, Food and Health Bureau, Government of the Hong Kong SAR (08070632). This project was also supported by the Area of Excellence Scheme of the Hong Kong University Grants Committee (grant no. AoE/M-12/06) and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (U54 GM088558) (Harvard Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics).
