AbstractDirect detection of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in mixed cultures by DNA filter assay was affected by the presence of other bacteria in the cultures. By shortening incubation to 6 h, bacterial overgrowth was minimized, allowing direct detection of ETEC in stools or mixed cultures initially containing 0.2 to 3% ETEC.
