AbstractAn algorithm is proposed for the generation of 'hybrid' finite element mesh composed of square and triangular elements over any arbitrary planar domain. Square elements are first generated in the interior of the domain leaving relatively small regions around the boundaries. These regions are then discretized into triangular elements using standard triangulation routine. The only required input data is the set of line segments defining the domain boundaries. The procedure for the formation of the square element at the interior parts will be discussed.
