AbstractA new zero voltage, soft switching converter is presented. This converter implements ZVS to minimise switching losses and it has special output power limiting characteristics. At a constant switching frequency the output power is limited to a maximum value and power falls at high current and low current. This is suitable for applications where power control is needed and the converter has inherent protection against short circuit and overvoltage at open circuit at the output. The authors provide analysis of the ZV soft switching converter; equations for different operating states and the power characteristics are presented. The work is verified by a 70W prototype converter circuit. © IEE, 1999.
