AbstractThe asymptotic approximation of electromagnetic field due to a dipole over layered media has been a research topic of continued interest, mainly due to its application in geophysics and microwave integrated circuits. One method of approximation of the field is to expand the wave in terms of contributions from the image sources of the dipole and find the asymptotic approximation of each image-source term. In the case of TE waves a branch-point could be arbitrarily close to the saddle point necessitating the field approximation with parabolic cylinder functions. However, for TM waves, in addition to an algebraic branch-point, there is a high order Sommerfeld pole which can be close to the saddle-point. The asymptotic approximation of the TM waves is considered.
