AbstractThe perfectly-matched layer (PML) concept for the reflectionless absorption of electromagnetic waves is reviewed using the language of differential forms. By interpretating the PML geometrically in terms of a change on the metric of space and exploring the metric independence of Maxwell's equations unfolded by the language, a deeper reason allowing for the ubiquitous presence of the Maxwellian PML is explained and a general framework unifying the various PML formulations is provided. Further, it is shown that many other classes of PML formulations can be derived in the frequency domain.
