| Abstract | This paper reviewed the depiction of non-European figures in papal audience chambers in early-modern Rome, and argued that the mode of depiction of these figures is closely related both to the changing priorities and messages of papal propaganda, and to the development of diplomatic instititutions, protocols and rituals. |
