Abstract | While physical test is always an essential means to study the structural behaviour of a structure, the finite element method has become an effective alternative in the recent years to provide detailed structural responses of the structure for in-depth understanding. This paper reports the latest developments on the use of advanced finite element models to examine, understand and appraise the structural performance of composite beams in buildings. Details of the advanced finite element models of a continuous composite beam, and a composite joint are presented together with careful calibration against test data. Moreover, the effects of the deformation characteristics of both shear connectors and tensile reinforcement in semi-continuous composite beams are also examined. The models are considered to be highly effective as a research tool for detailed investigation into the structural behaviour of composite beams and joints, as well as a specialist tool for advanced analysis and design of composite beams and joints. Effective use of the models will be instrumental to the design development of more refined design rules for improved structural accuracy. |
