Abstract | One change brought about by the transplantation of Javanese to Suriname has already been documented: The elaborately layered system of honorificity has been leveled out in Surinamese Javanese. This chapter addresses contact effects that have so far remained unstudied. Many speakers below 25 years experience retrieval difficulties when confronted with the stimuli in our elicitation kit. Hence many contact effects in fact appear to be symptoms of language attrition rather than a representing a more balanced kind of multilingual language practice. |
