Abstract | The study of creativity and how best to develop it in schools has become a recent topic of research interest within Asian populations. The fostering of creativity is best if started early, with young learners in kindergartens and also primary school students. There are unique features of the approaches to creativity in Asian countries due to cultural differences, traditions, and practice, but there are also some features that are shared in common with Western countries. The aim of this paper is to provide a synthesis of studies from Asian communities such as Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, and Singapore. Creativity research literature from early childhood and elementary classrooms is reviewed, and key issues in creative teaching and creative learning are identified. In particular, the review sheds light on how creativity is fostered in the unique school context of an Asian cultural background, and suggests teaching strategies for educators. Future research directions in creativity enhancement will also be offered. |
