Abstract | Director Yu Hyun-Mok's Obaltan remains South Korea's most celebrated film that exposed a critical weakness in the implication of the national dream, one that was grounded in a Confucianism that has lost its virtuous centre. Yu invoked an Italian Neorealist film aesthetic to uncover this distinctly South Korean national trauma where money became the leading societal obsession, which fundamentally placed it at odds with Confucianism's focus on virtue. |
