AbstractCold-formed ferritic stainless steel has low or even no nickel content that provides an alternative to other grades of stainless steel in structural application. A finite element model was developed for cold-formed ferritic stainless steel beams. The model is capable to predict the flexural behaviour of the ferritic stainless steel beams. In this study, square and rectangular hollow sections have been investigated. An extensive parametric study was carried out to investigate the key parameters such as slenderness ratio of internal elements, deformation capacities and moment capacities of cold-formed ferritic stainless steel hollow sections. The results were used to assess the current design rules in European code and continuous strength method (CSM) for design of cold-formed ferritic stainless steel beams. It is shown that the current design methods provide conservative predictions on the nominal strengths of the cold-formed stainless steel flexural members.
