AbstractThe bond behaviour of reinforcing bars in concrete has a determining role in the crack control and serviceability of reinforced concrete members. Bond is generally measured by means of the pull out test. However, there is no universal test method established, and different test methods could yield different measurement results. This research aims to redesign the test method of bond in reinforced concrete. By carrying out finite element simulation, variations in stress distributions inside the concrete specimen are unveiled. Such variations are due to uneven contact pressure and friction between concrete and steel platen of the test setup. With a view to minimise potential errors due to non-uniform stress distributions, rubber pad and low friction polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film are employed at the interfaces. The redesigned test method can more accurately reveal the bond properties for structural analysis and design.
