Abstract | Word learning involves encoding and consolidation of new word forms. These steps assume different strengths or detail in phonological representations, as do nonword and real-word repetition tasks. We tested the strength of these repetition tasks as predictors of lexicon size with 22 toddlers. Nonword repetition predicted receptive growth; real-word repetition predicted expressive, reflecting gradual strengthening or consolidation of phonological representations.
