AbstractThis paper aims to investigate the effects of shading from the building itself and nearby buildings on the energy consumption of high-rise office buildings in Hong Kong. The paper first analyzes the typical shading effects on energy use in Hong Kong by investigating four typical office buildings with different building typologies and surroundings. The paper then chooses one typical building for further parametric study. Energy consumption regression models are established under different height, building interval and orientation conditions. The findings reveal that the shading effects show a great influence on energy consumption of highrise buildings and cannot be neglected.
