AbstractPenghu, composed of nearly one hundred islets, is in the Taiwan Strait as a distal foreland 100-200 km west of the orogenic belt. Much of Penghu is a remanent of shield volcanoes and mostly covered with several layers of tholeiite and alkali basalt. K/Ar, fission track and 40Ar/39Ar whole rock analyses from a number of samples spanning the entire Penghu area all have been used to suggest the onset of volcanism near the middle Miocene and ending around the late Miocene. Previous studies generally accepted that the Penghu volcanism was associated with extensional tectonic events. Establishing the high-resolution ages for the basaltic samples will enable to test the hypothesis of the time and duration for the Penghu volcanism. In this study, we systematically collected more than 10 fresh samples from several islets in Penghu. We dated 150-180 µm size fractions of groundmass from each sample by using 40Ar/39Ar method. Our age data will provide a better understanding of the tectonic history in East Asia.
