AbstractThe influence of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) on children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has predominantly been examined from a behavioral perspective. How CCPT impacts on the neural activity has not been directly explored. The current research investigates the effects of CCPT interventions on children with ASD, as evidenced by electroencephalogram (EEG) brain alpha power and behavioral measurement. The research has three phases. Phase I aimed to explore the relationship between the EEG alpha power and the social interaction status. Phase II, the primary study of this research, sought to determine if alpha power and behaviors will show significant changes in children with ASD who participated in CCPT. Phase III aimed to examine the correlation between CCPT-caused changes in alpha power and behavioral measures across participants. The findings of Phase I indicate that alpha power can reflect shifts in mental states in varying social settings. The results from Phase II confirm that the CCPT intervention notably increased the EEG alpha amplitude, suggesting an increased mental relaxation. This assertion was corroborated by behavioral measures, which displayed improvements in social skills in the experimental group following the intervention. Further analysis in Phase III demonstrated a robust correlation between the rise in alpha power and the improvement in behavioral outcomes, further affirming CCPT's effectiveness. This research supports the efficacy of CCPT as a therapy for children with ASD from a neurological standpoint and the utility of alpha power measurements in identifying changes in mental state related to social interaction and therapeutic intervention.
