| Abstract | This chapter examines engagement in the broader context of teaching and learning, addresses why student engagement is important, and provides suggestions for how to encourage students to engage meaningfully. The chapter views the purpose of education through a lens of acculturation in which the goal is for learners to transition from students into chemical practitioners. By structuring our classes and activities to be investigative and more like research, we can encourage meaningful engagement within our students and provide them opportunities to become intellectually independent. |
