AbstractTwo experiments investigated how group norms in ability-effort relationship interact with group identification to influence the achievement motivation of students with different levels of ability. The findings suggest that internalization of group norm that endorses inverse relationship between ability and effort decreases students' motivation to make up for weaknesses.
