Central auditory processing: A brief introduction to the processes involved and the non-verbal behavioural tests that can be used with Polish-speaking patients

Abstract

This manuscript addresses an overview of the definition of (central) auditory processing and the auditory processes involved in the central auditory function. The audiotry processes of phonetic decoding or auditory closure, temporal resolution, temporal configuration, binaural interaction and binaural separation and integration are explained. Also, some examples of clinical manifestations when each of this process is impaired are provided. This article discusses the non-verbal (central) auditory processing tests that can be used with Polish-speaking patients. General technical information and clinical procedures of the tests are provided. Finally, it is suggested a clinical criterion/approach when choosing a (central) auditory processing test battery for a specific patient.

W pracy przedstawiono definicję ośrodkowych procesów przetwarzania słuchowego oraz opis procesów słuchowych zachodzących w ośrodkowym układzie nerwowym. Wyjaśniono znaczenie takich procesów, jak dekodowanie fonetyczne, rozdzielczość i konfiguracja czasowa, obuuszna interakcja, obuuszna separacja i integracja. Podano również kilka przykładów klinicznych występowania tych procesów. W artykule omówiono również testy, szczególnie pozawerbalne, które mogą być stosowane w diagnostyce pacjentów polskojęzycznych. Podano ogólne informacje techniczne oraz metody kliniczne. Zasugerowano również kryteria kliniczne dla wyboru baterii testów (centralnego) przetwarzania słuchowego w przypadku poszczególnych pacjentów.
