Dr Ip, Pun Ching Philip 葉品正
Dr. Ip is a graduate of The University of Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, and completed his postgraduate pathology training at The University of Hong Kong, Queen Mary Hospital.
Dr. Ip undertook gynecologic pathology fellowships at The Vancouver General Hospital, The University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and The Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. Dr. Ip has presented widely and internationally and authored papers and book chapters in the field of Gynecological Pathology, including the 4th Edition of WHO Classification of Tumours of Female Reproductive Organs (2014), and the 5th Edition of WHO Classification of Female Genital Tumours (2020).
One of the daily challenges of a pathologist is to correctly classify tumors into biological categories so that patients are managed appropriately. However, many lesions are not classifiable as either benign or malignant. These problematic or atypical lesions, even if managed conservatively, often require long follow-ups, which can lead to anxiety in the patient. To supplement his years of experience in diagnostic gynecological pathology, Dr. Ip endeavors to gain a greater understanding of rare and uncommon gynecological malignancies, especially those with ambiguous morphology and uncertain biological behavior. His research interestes are to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of the development and progression of some of these malignancies, in search of biomarkers to aid diagnosis and to conduct preclinical drugs testing. Such valuable information has a direct impact on patient management and may serve as a foundation for the development of targeted therapy and personalized medicine. Dr. Ip currently has active and established collaborations both locally and internationally.
Dr. Ip's career missions include:
Finding better treatments for patients who are suffering from rare cancers - diseases that are less well understood and often less well studied. He wants to improve the lives of those who are less fortunate. Dr. Ip is currently studying the genetic and genomic changes in his large collection of cases as well as conducting preclinical drug testing.
Empowering and inspiring future doctors and scientists through both words and actions. He sets examples by demonstrating the finest professional work ethics. He encourages his students to discover their own personal and professional life missions, seeks their best individual roles and responsibilities, and fully understand the unique contributions they can offer that will improve the lives of their patients and society as a whole. He is currently a Clinical Academic Advisor and Enrichment Year Mentor for medical students.
Safeguarding professional standards, integrity, and safety to the highest degree. Dr. Ip is currently The Chief Examiner for Anatomical Pathology at The Hong Kong College of Pathologists and was a panel member for the Genetic and Genomic Pathology First Fellowship Assessment for the College.
