Biography

Dr Sophelia Chan is the Clinical Assistant Professor of the Paediatric Neurology, Developmental Paediatrics and Neurohabilitation Team of the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, LSK Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. As a Specialist in Paediatrics, she further and had completed both subspecialty training in Developmental Behavioural Paediatrics and Paediatric Neurology. Her Paediatric Rehabilitation Clinical Fellowship was in the New England Medical Centre under the Tuft University, and her Pediatric EMG training was through the EMG lab attachment in the Children’s Hospital, Boston. She further completed her Paediatric Myology Clinical and Research Fellowship in the Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre in the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

In 2009, she started the Paediatric Neuromuscular Disorder Program including a multi-specialty team in the Queen Mary Hospital and Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital focusing on the advancement in the diagnosis, treatment and management of paediatric rare neuromuscular diseases. In 2016, the Paediatric Neuromuscular Team, under her leadership was awarded the outstanding team at the HK Hospital Authority Convention.

Her research focus include both pre-clinical and clinical research on rare neurological diseases with special focus on rare neuromuscular diseases and immune-mediated neurological disorders. She is currently the  principal investigator of several clinical trials in Hong Kong University for spinal muscular atrophy and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
