AbstractThis presentation examines Senior Secondary Liberal Studies textbooks to assess the degree to which they align with the stated aim of enabling students to “appreciate...diversity in cultures and views in a pluralistic society.” The main objective is to analyze how ethnic and religious minorities in mainland China and Hong Kong are represented in textbooks. The aim of the analysis is to develop more substantive understanding of how Liberal Studies textual resources represent and portray multicultural diversity in society. After elaborating on definitions of religious and ethnic minorities used in the research, this paper will share quantitative and qualitative results of the content analysis of textbooks for 3 of 6 modules of Senior Secondary Liberal Studies, “Modern China,” “Globalization,” and “Hong Kong Today.
