AbstractThe science achievement in Hong Kong has fluctuated moderately in the last two decades. In the same period of time, ten new curriculum policies that could influence science education have been introduced in Hong Kong. These curriculum policies were summarized in this paper. Through analyzing the achievement and contextual data obtained through TIMSS 1995 – 2011, the implementation of curriculum policies that steered Hong Kong away from a content-focused curriculum and that resulted in subject integration and reduction were studied. In addition, the impacts of the medium-of-instruction policy on science education were also reviewed. Through the consideration of these policies, factors that affect the extent of the implementation of science curriculum in Hong Kong including the ease of monitoring, the presence of competing curricular initiatives and the depth of the required classroom changes were identified.
