Professor Lo, Chung Mau 盧寵茂
Professor Lo is currently Chin Lan-Hong Professor and Chair of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery as well as Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Hong Kong. He is internationally renowned for his expertise in hepatobiliary surgery, liver cancer and liver transplantation. He has published over 400 original articles in refereed national and international journals and authored 10 book chapters. His pioneering work in adult right lobe living donor liver transplantation has revolutionalized the practice of liver transplant world-wide and has put Hong Kong and China on the world map of liver transplant. As a result, he and his team were awarded China’s top national honor of First-class State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2005. He has contributed to the advancement in the prevention and management of recurrent hepatitis B after liver transplantation through a series of novel observations and studies. These include the novel observation of adoptive immunity transfer of hepatitis B immunity through liver transplantation and occult infection of both donor and recipient origin. In addition, he developed and demonstrated the efficacy of a strategy of nucleoside analog mono-prophylaxis without the need of hepatitis B immunoglobulin mono-prophylaxis. This strategy, together with his other studies on active immunization to restore hepatitis B immunity, has turned the transplant community away from the use of passive immune-prophylaxis and has significant clinical and economic impact, especially in Asia where hepatitis B is endemic. His other research area is in hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly regarding recurrence after surgical treatment. A collaborative study between Hong Kong and Italy demonstrated several distinct prognostic factors that will have important implication for the selection criteria for liver transplantation in future. In addition, he has conducted randomized controlled trials that showed futility of adjuvant chemotherapy and the efficacy of adjuvant interferon after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma.
He was the President of the International Liver Transplantation Society and the International Society for Digestive Surgery. He has served in the editorial board of many prestigious journals, including, as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Transplantation, World Journal of Surgery, Hepatology International, Deputy Editor of Liver Transplantation and as editorial board member of the Annals of Surgery and Surgery. He has been elected as an Honorary Fellow of the American Surgical Association and the American College of Surgeons, as well as an Honorary Member of the European Surgical Association. He was appointed as Justice of Pease by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR since 2012.
