Biography

Dr Eric Lau is an infectious disease epidemiologist with a focus on surveillance and transmission dynamics of infectious diseases in human and animals, and assessment of infection control measures. His previous work has contributed to the understanding and control of emerging human and zoonotic diseases such as SARS, MERS, scarlet fever, avian influenza A(H7N9) and COVID-19. His latest projects focus on characterizing the impact of healthcare-seeking behavior on infectious disease surveillance, transmission dynamics of hand-foot-and-mouth disease and surveillance strategy of avian influenza in live poultry markets. He is also actively involved in teaching and is the coordinator of two Advanced Statistics courses in the Master of Public Health programme.

Dr Lau has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles on statistics, epidemiology and disease surveillance. He has also contributed in reviewing manuscripts for various leading international journals, such as American Journal of Epidemiology, Journal of Medical Internet Research, Statistics in Medicine, Nature Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, Science and The Lancet Infectious Diseases. He serves as an Editorial Board Member at BMC Infectious Diseases and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases.
