Professor Lai, Tsz Tsun Francisco 黎子駿
I am a psychopharmacoepidemiologist focusing on real-world evidence (RWE) for central nervous system (CNS)/ psychotropic drugs, the long-term safety of medications, and psychosomatic or other patterns of multimorbidities. I was trained extensively in quantitative social sciences during my undergraduate years, graduating with the Dean’s Award in Social Science, and transitioned into the field of epidemiology and health/ medical research during my postgraduate studies.
Since joining The University of Hong Kong (HKU), I have conceptualized, initiated, and overseen numerous research studies as the senior/ corresponding author which led to publications in high-impact journals, such as Lancet Psychiatry and World Psychiatry. In a first-author capacity, I have led research published in Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Canadian Medical Association Journal, and Nature Communications. I published more than 140 scholarly journal articles, with an H-Index of 33 (Google Scholar, as of Sep 2025). My research has been shortlisted for the HKU Research Output Prize multiple times since 2022, and the societal impact of my works on pharmacovigilance during public health emergencies have also been recognized by the HKU Knowledge Exchange Award in 2023. In 2025, I received the Young Leaders in Global Health Award from the Academic Alliance of the World Health Summit (co-patronized by the Chancellor of Germany, President of France, and Director-General of the World Health Organization) in recognition of my achievements in advancing population health.
So far, my accumulated research funding (as Principal Investigator) amounts to more than USD 1.5 million. I have served as a research grant reviewer for the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), a scientific referee for more than 30 scholarly journals, e.g., notably, New England Journal of Medicine, and currently an editorial board member for a number of journals such as Communications Medicine (Nature Publishing Group), Stress and Health, and Journal of Multimorbidity and Comorbidity.
