AbstractLearning in and through fieldwork usually occurs as apprenticeship in a situated, real-life context. This Interactional Ethnography of an ecology fieldwork initiative in Hong Kong adopts a microethnographic discourse analysis (ME/DA) using video recordings from point-of-view (POV) glasses. Analysis of university ecologist and secondary biology student micro-interactions illustrates how the ecologist shuttled between two sociomaterial ‘presences’ weaving scientific reasoning with the physical manipulation of natural objects in the field.
