Dr Janet Yuen-Ha Wong, RN, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the School of Nursing of the University of Hong Kong. She received her PhD at the University of Hong Kong. During her PhD study, she had been awarded Fulbright visiting scholarship (2010–2011) affiliated with University of Virginia in the United States. She joined the University of Hong Kong as a Clinical Instructor in 2007 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2017.
Her principal research area lies in different contributors to health inequalities and vulnerabilities, including intimate partner violence, poverty, ethnic minority and sexual minority. She has been contributed to the examining those relationships by using large-scale surveys. In the field of intimate partner violence (IPV). She primarily focuses on determining health impact of IPV survivors. She particularly interested in brain-body interactions linking physical, neurological, psychological, and social factors to health and disease vulnerability in abused women. Some of her work focuses on advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and heart rate variability (HRV) integrated with the field of biobehavioural medicine and stress physiology to understand the impact of IPV on abused women’s health. To help the women in understanding the association among abuse, stress and health, she delivered a number of invited talks in the communities. She is also appointed as Advisory Board Member of Hong Kong Single Parents Association and elected as the Asia Regional Coordinator for Sigma Theta Thau International Honor Society of Nursing.
She is committed to address the needs of college students in dating abusive relationships and in engaging risky sexual behaviours. Therefore, she completed a large-scale survey involving 4 major local universities and qualitative interviews with IPV perpetrators and victims in college to understand their IPV experiences. She provided innovative training workshops at HKU CEDARS to educate college students as ambassadors to help peers in dating abuse and violence. She also developed a Chinese website Dating Café to educate youth about the awareness of dating violence, sexual consent and risky sexual behaviours. All her work and the research findings enabled the development and evaluation of an interactive computer-based sex education programme with the component of sexual violence prevention for female college students.
